In The Sphere: Online Crit

I attended The Pupil Sphere Online Crits to gain further feedback on my portfolio and to get the perspective of people who weren’t familiar with my work.

Amelia and Wes were very helpful and gave me lots of advice on further progressing my work post-uni and the different routes I could go down with it.

They gave me advice on how I could have explored the theme of female stereotypes and using self-portraiture in the future.

The key pieces of feedback I received from The Pupil Sphere team and the other students in the crit were:

  • Refine the project statement to explain the significance of the hair- what the domestic/housewife elements mean.

  • This is the scope of what can be explored further- how my project can develop post-uni ad where it can go.

  • Self-portraiture for the right reasons is key- is it a transformative experience? Female bodies are being told what to do when using models- doing it yourself takes back control over narrative and the body

  • Performance-led, could try on film? Would help a performance element.

  • Shooting on film could change how you feel around the images- the slow processing of it may give a different opinion or perspective

  • They also said that this is a good base for a practice- can combine this fine art style with commercial practice as well.

This crit was very helpful and gave me ideas on how this project could be developed further after university which is something that I am considering exploring further as it is a versatile theme that can be explored in a variety of ways. The feedback has given me loads of ideas to work from in the future which is important when starting a freelance career- having a base to my work.
