Project Progression 4: Studio and Portfolio Refining

After weeks of shooting at home, I was finally able to go back into the studio at university and progress my work further.

I played around with different ideas and used various household/ domestic objects. I had the red silk material from before as I had bought a few fabrics from a fabric shop online. I thought the plain colours would work well and bring in the masculine and feminine into one.

I recreated a table with the head like in my previous photos with the iron. Disguising the mask with my hair was quite difficult but I managed to photoshop some hair over it so the mask wasn’t as obscure.

I decided to hide the rest of the body and just show the head (and shoulders in some shots) to isolate the head as more of a surreal, uneasy photo and a direct gaze to the camera.

For the second and third set of photos, I used the hand-painted fabric again as the colours match with the outfit.

I had been researching feminist artists and domesticity and came across Zanele Muholi whose work inspired this shoot. I decided to use pegs and coat hangers on the hair and treat the body as an object again, this time using a longer hair wig I bought from Amazon so it was easier and more time-efficient to hide my face using a wig rather than styling my own hair.

After I had shot these, I looked through my images so far and printed them all out to decide which ones to keep and also the sequencing of the images and considerations for my final presentation of work.
